The team found the dramatic function of The Boy curious. Was he included in the play as part of the comedy, or because of what widely became known during rehearsals as the 'ahhhh' factor? The difference in the cultural conception of children in the sixteenth century means that his reception by a modern audience inevitably varies from the original audience's, although the directive that he should be performed by 'the lest that can play' in the dramatis personae might indicate that he was also being performed for the 'ahhhh' factor originally.
